Acrylic Cutting for Sign Fabrication: Techniques, Tools, and Best Practices
Acrylic Cutting for Sign Fabrication
Acrylic is one of the most versatile materials in sign fabrication. It is used for dimensional letters, backlit displays, point-of-purchase fixtures, and architectural signage. Cutting acrylic cleanly and accurately requires specific tools and techniques.
Cutting Methods
Scoring and breaking is the simplest method for straight cuts. A scoring tool makes a shallow groove in the acrylic surface, and the sheet is then snapped along the score line. This method is fast but limited to straight cuts.
Router cutting produces smooth edges on complex shapes but requires dust collection and produces heat that can melt the acrylic if the feed rate is too slow.
Flatbed cutter with drag knife can score acrylic for breaking along complex curves. This approach combines the speed of scoring with the ability to cut complex shapes.
Laser cutting produces the cleanest edges but requires specialized equipment.
Flatbed Cutter Approach
For shops without laser cutting capability, a flatbed cutter with scoring tools can handle many acrylic cutting applications. The CUTWORX USA Apex Series supports scoring tools for acrylic applications.
Edge Finishing
After cutting, acrylic edges typically require finishing. Flame polishing produces a clear, glossy edge. Buffing with progressively finer abrasives achieves similar results without heat.
