Dye-Sublimation Printing for Textile Applications: Equipment, Process, and Markets

Dye-Sublimation Printing for Textile Applications

Dye-sublimation printing produces vibrant, durable graphics on polyester fabrics and coated hard substrates. The process transfers dye from a printed transfer paper to the substrate using heat and pressure, producing prints that are embedded in the material rather than sitting on the surface.

Process Overview

Dye-sublimation involves two steps: printing the design onto transfer paper using sublimation inks, and transferring the design to the substrate using a heat press. The heat causes the dye to sublimate (convert from solid to gas) and bond with the polyester fibers or coating.

Applications

Soft signage: Trade show displays, retail banners, and event graphics on stretch fabric Apparel: Custom sportswear, promotional garments, and fashion items Hard substrates: Mugs, phone cases, and other coated items

Equipment

Mimaki offers dye-sublimation printing systems for both transfer paper and direct-to-fabric applications. Amcad & Graphics provides these systems with full support.

Market Opportunity

The textile printing market is growing at approximately 9.4% annually, driven by demand for custom apparel and soft signage. Shops with dye-sublimation capability can serve markets that are not accessible with traditional wide format equipment.
