Mounting Graphics to Foam Board: Tips for Clean, Professional Results
Mounting Graphics to Foam Board
Foam board mounting is one of the most common finishing operations in sign production. Done correctly, it produces clean, professional displays. Done incorrectly, it produces bubbles, wrinkles, and adhesion failures that require reprinting.
Preparation
Both the graphic and the foam board must be clean and free of dust before mounting. Static electricity attracts dust to both surfaces, and even small particles can cause visible bubbles under the graphic. Anti-static cleaning is recommended for high-quality work.
The foam board must be flat. Warped or bowed foam board cannot be mounted cleanly without a flatbed laminator that can apply even pressure across the entire surface.
Adhesive Selection
Pressure-sensitive mounting films are the most common adhesive for foam board mounting. They provide immediate tack without heat, allowing repositioning before final pressure is applied. Permanent mounting films provide stronger adhesion but do not allow repositioning.
For high-volume production, a flatbed laminator with a mounting film applicator provides consistent results. The SIGNROLLER USA flatbed applicator table is designed specifically for this application.
Cutting After Mounting
After mounting, the graphic typically needs to be trimmed to the foam board edge. A flatbed cutter from CUTWORX USA can handle this step with precision, cutting through both the graphic and the foam board in a single pass.
