MultiCam: The American CNC Powerhouse That Redefined Digital Finishing

By the Editor

In the expansive landscape of digital finishing and automated manufacturing, few companies have demonstrated the sheer versatility and enduring industrial presence of MultiCam. Founded in the heart of Texas, MultiCam's journey from a specialized automation firm to a global provider of CNC cutting solutions is a testament to American engineering and strategic market expansion. Its eventual acquisition by Kongsberg Precision Cutting Systems not only marked a new chapter for the company but also created a diversified manufacturing powerhouse [1].

The Founding and Early Years

MultiCam's origins trace back to 1989 in Dallas, Texas. The company was initially founded as Machine Automation Technology by Ken Koelling, who began by building complete, customized CNC systems [2]. From the outset, the focus was on delivering robust, high-quality, "Made-in-America" products utilizing American steel and components [3]. This commitment to domestic manufacturing quality established a strong foundation for the company's reputation in durability and reliability.

In its early years, MultiCam recognized the growing need for automated cutting solutions across a wide array of industries. The company did not limit itself to a single technology or market segment. Instead, it engineered a diverse portfolio that eventually encompassed CNC routers, digital cutters, lasers, plasma, and waterjet cutting machines [3]. This technological breadth allowed MultiCam to serve industries ranging from sign making and digital finishing to aerospace, automotive, sheet-metal processing, cabinet making, and plastics fabrication [1].

Expansion and Market Penetration

As the demand for precision cutting grew throughout the 1990s and 2000s, MultiCam expanded its operations and global footprint. The company delivered over 14,000 machines worldwide, each made to order and built to withstand rigorous industrial environments [1]. To support this massive installed base, MultiCam developed a comprehensive network of sales, service, and process application experts. This network included 60 locations worldwide, with 20 Technology Centers dedicated to customer support and demonstration across North America [1].

"The MultiCam brand is synonymous with quality, durability and ease of use. We have worked for over 30 years to diligently build a world class organization in the focused cutting arenas of routing, fabrication and digital finishing." — David J. Morse, CEO of MultiCam, Inc. [1]

Under the ownership of Rosewood Private Investments, MultiCam continued to refine its product offerings. The company became particularly known for its heavy-duty CNC routers and the Celero series of wide-format digital cutting systems, which provided high-speed finishing capabilities for the graphics and packaging markets. MultiCam's ability to cater to both heavy industrial fabrication and precise graphic finishing made it a unique player in the automated cutting space.

The Kongsberg PCS Acquisition

The trajectory of MultiCam took a monumental turn in August 2021. Kongsberg Precision Cutting Systems (Kongsberg PCS), newly established as a stand-alone business under OpenGate Capital, announced the acquisition of MultiCam [1]. This strategic move was designed to create the world's first diversified provider of digital finishing and CNC cutting machines.

The acquisition was a perfect alignment of complementary strengths. Kongsberg brought 50 years of outstanding history in digital finishing with over 12,000 machines installed globally, while MultiCam contributed its robust CNC routing, fabrication expertise, and an installed base of over 14,000 machines [1]. The combination provided Kongsberg PCS with immediate scale and a significantly expanded market reach, particularly in North America.

Stuart Fox, President of Kongsberg PCS, highlighted the strategic value of the merger: "Our businesses coming together to drive best-in-class cutting and finishing processes will deliver a tremendous advantage for our global customer base... MultiCam has extraordinary market reach with its range of CNC routers, laser, plasma, waterjet and knife cutting machines, and we are thrilled to now welcome MultiCam to the Kongsberg family" [1].

Production Impact and Undeniable Legacy

The integration of MultiCam into Kongsberg PCS represented more than just corporate consolidation; it signaled a shift in the digital finishing industry. Manufacturers were increasingly seeking comprehensive solutions capable of handling diverse materials, from delicate textiles and corrugated board to thick acrylics, aluminum, and steel. By uniting Kongsberg's precision knife cutting technology with MultiCam's heavy-duty routing and fabrication systems, the combined entity could address the full spectrum of customer needs.

Following the acquisition, MultiCam continued to operate under its established brand name within Kongsberg PCS, with CEO David J. Morse joining the senior management team [1]. The synergy between the two companies allowed for cross-pollination of technology, expanded service networks, and new opportunities in tooling and consumables.

Today, MultiCam's legacy is defined by its robust engineering and its pivotal role in bridging the gap between traditional industrial fabrication and modern digital finishing. The company that started by building customized automation systems in Texas has become an integral part of a global cutting solutions provider, ensuring that the MultiCam name will continue to represent durability and precision for decades to come.
